Perfect - Review of Matava - Fiji's Premier Eco Adventure Resort, Kadavu Island, Fiji - TripAdvisor

This place is a little slice of heaven.

However, if you are the type that likes to be entertained or have schedules then this isn't the place for you. We spent 5 days here and didn't dive or fish but we were busy. We went kayaking, hiking, exploring the mud flats, snorkling (it's quite good right out front of the resort) and just relaxed and slept. A much needed rest.

The food was great and all staff were friendly and helpful. Oh, we did take the kayak trip to the remote village and although our guide didn't seem super pumped to be out there with us, we had a fantastic adventure with him. he was knowledgeable. The village was a highlight and the voices of the children singing to us while we hiked to the waterfall is one of my favorite memories. It was hard to leave this place.

It's rustic and wonderful, our type of place.

Matava Resort- das Tor zum Great Astrolab Reef - Review of Matava - Fiji's Premier Eco Adventure Resort, Kadavu Island, Fiji - TripAdvisor

Matava - is meal plan necessary? - Fiji Forum - TripAdvisor

I had thought that we wouldn't eat that much...I am a caterer, don't eat 3 meals a day....and couldn't wait to see what was for each meal. Not only are they served impecably, by Maggie, but the food is outstanding. Matava is an organic garden...filled with bananas, mangos, just hanging around everywhere. Breakfast was lots of fresh fruit, breads daily, smoothies eggs and savory things. I love eggplant and they made that for ever meal for me. You can ask for anything and they will make it with a smile. Lunch and dinner were amazing. Dinner is by candle light, water is abundant there and they have a great assortment of wines. All kept for you, so you don't have to finish a bottle, with your name on it. My dream is to go back to Matava. We left all our clothes and shoes for the crew and they took them back to the villages. I brought crayons, and gave them to a happy group. We walked to the village, Maggie had some of the kids jump about 70 feet, no lie, doing flips ect. We were the ONLY people in the village, no tour. One day i walked in and we were given leis that the women made.

One day we got back and our bure was filled with flowers, Gardenias, hibiscus all over the floors and bed.

The last night, while sitting on the floor, the crew singing songs for us, they brought out a cake for my husband and I.

I have nothing but the highest praises for Matava and can't wait to go back, enjoy

Resort - Traveller Reviews - Peaceful and Relaxing - TripAdvisor

Matava is a tiny eco resort with room for only about 22 guests.

All guests eat together and we made some great friends this way. The staff are unique and funny. The location is so lovely, by the sea and very remote so it feels like a real adventure to actually be there.

Great snorkling and I wasn`t bored at all just soaking it all up. Fill up on the real fijian experience!

Kadavu Island forum: Matava Resort - TripAdvisor

"Went in November 2007 for a week and absolutely loved it.

Once you land it is an hour boat ride to the resort and the boat is very small but the view is spectacular - reminds you of what the first explorers would have seen - so untouched. Maggi welcomes you and takes you to your bure. Most of them do not have electricity but ours had a light in the main area and the bathroom but we never used them.

Anything that needs to plugged in can be done in the office. We dove every day and it was spectacular - my first experience with Manta Rays and there were seven swimming around us - awesome!

We took the meal package and enjoyed eating with everyone and the conversations that took place. Of course had the Kava experience and the Lovo - cooking on rocks.

You are welcome to bring your own alcohol and we brought a box of red wine which they kept for us and served it at dinner. As long as you can handle being without your blackberry and laptop this is the place for you.

We recommended to other friends who went this year in June and also thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the diving."

"as always, matava on the island of kadavu....each to his own, but i still dream of sitting on our deck, looking out at the island across from us, watching the tides go in and out....walking to dinner , through the organic fruit trees, looking for the oil lights of the over the ocean dining deck, , and salavating over the most intiaviative menus...i wonder if it was really real....enjoy

oh, and the staff, we left everythng that we owned to them and their families...

as we landed at the small airport, a woman came up to us and said, 'we were just at matava, and you will have the best trip of your life'...i will never forget that. again, enjoy"

"If you are up for a bit of adventure, head to Kadavu Island.

It's got to be one of the most ruggedly magnificent islands in the archipelago. There you can visit waterfalls, kayak, see authentic FIji at it's best.

I highly recommend Matava Resort, which is Fiji's leading Adventure resort.

They do it all. It's great for budget-mid range travelers, the owners are fabulous, food is great, guests are fun."

Beqa Island forum: has anyone stayed at beqa lagoon resort? - TripAdvisor

"Ducks i'm not from Fiji nor have i ever been to fiji but i've been extensivly researching my vacation there for April. We decided on the Macamuncas for many reasons but after everything was booked and paid for i descovered this resort called Matava on the southern island of Kadavu.

If i had seen this before my vacation was booked i would have definatly checked it out. www.matava.com From what it looks like its a more private laid back resort slightly off the beaten path.

They also look like they have some awsome dive sites like the Astrolabe Reef. And a Manta Reef. Apperently this Manta Reef is one of the few places in the world where Manta Rays can be seen Regularly. I'm considering booking my next vacation just to go down and see the Mantas. But like i said i've never been, i just think you should check it out before you book."

And away to Kadavu...

And away to Kadavu...

There were still no golden doves to be found in the forest the next morning, or much else (but I'd pretty much got most of what I was after the day before anyway so that was alright). When we got back to Raintree, Robyn went fishing. There was a sign at the counter saying that if you could catch a fish in the lake then they would cook it for you for free. If it sounds like there might be a catch you'd be right. The fishing line was just a length of cord tied to an empty coke bottle, there was no sinker, the bait was an old piece of bread, the double-hulled wooden canoe provided was leaking so badly that there were actually small fish living inside it, and finally Tilapia don't really take hooks anyway, they just nibble the bait away (especially if it's soggy bread!). Nevertheless, Robyn was determined. So determined, in fact, that she stole the inflatable dinghy and went out in that in preference to the canoe.

She caught no fish.

The next day we bused off to Nausori airport to catch a plane to Kadavu, a smallish island to the southeast of Viti Levu. We were wondering how many people were going to be on the flight. The lounge was full (that is, there were about twenty people in it) but most turned out to be waiting on passengers from other flights. In the end there were only three people on the Kadavu plane, and two of them were me and Robyn. The plane itself only had eight seats. It looked like a matchbox toy. I discovered that I prefer tiny local planes to big international ones. Either way you're going to die if they crash, so better in a fun plane then a crowded commercial one.

Kadavu is a regular destination for birders, divers, and probably nobody else. There are four endemic birds on the island: the Kadavu shining parrot, Kadavu fantail, Kadavu honeyeater, and the whistling dove. The birders generally stay at either Biana's Accommodation or Reece's Place (apparently now called Nakuita Resort, but nobody on Kadavu knew it by that name). We tried Biana's first but they were fully booked by a group from the University of the South Pacific (the USP) in Suva. Biana helpfully put a call through to Reece's Place and organised a room there, but we would have to wait for high-tide because Reece's Place was situated on an offshore island called Galoa. Robyn put the wait to good use by going to sleep. I put it to better use by going birding.

"Kadavu is awesome! I love that little rugged island.

Matava is an eco resort, very picturesque, great food that Jeannie, the owner, grows right out of her organic garden. They have kayak trips, waterfall treks, village visits, and a great staff and wonderful owners. It is very reasonable.

The only drawback is that they don't have a white sandy beach, but you can kayak a few minutes down the way, and you find your nice sandy beach."

"My son recently spent 3 weeks on Kadavu (Jul. 05).

He travelled all over Fiji (including outer Islands) and recommends Kadavu as being a good place to find the real Fiji. Matava Resort is set in a good location, let them know what you want to do and you should be able to go on plenty of natural hikes to local villages that are unaffected by tourist impact. Matava is more than prepared to let you do the tourist things, eg. kayaking/scuba diving etc.

Diving is as good as it gets in Fiji

"Fiji has terrific diving. For the best sites (I'm a diver and have lived here for almost 10 years) your best bets are: Beqa Lagoon, Kadavu Island, Taveuni and Savusavu.

For a limited budget, I'd definitely recommend Kadavu. Check out Matava Resort.

They are wonderful, have dorm rooms (plus private bures) and have a whole slew of activities as well.

The owners (English and Americans) are right on site, and the dive masters and guides are great. Food is exceptional - organic and fresh.

I highly recommend it.

I love it and am sure you will as well.

ENJOY!"

"-Kadavu Island. Great island! Rugged, untamed, adventurous. Matava is wonderful - they have a dorm, also a private bure with shared bathroom facilities for a great price.

They have the best on site owners/managers, wonderful staff, the most awesome food, and they'll take you gamefishing, snorkeling, kayaking, picnicing.

It's not a real backpacker type place, so that might fit the bill for you.

They don't have a white sand beach, but if you paddle a few meters away, there's a private island with a great beach and they'll pack you a lunch you can take with you.

ENJOY!"

There was a family just before us and the little girl, while visting the village, wanted to go to school. Each day, the school children would walk from the village and get the girl, returning her each day. The place is magical. If you need any more assistance, let me know.

Google Matava.com and talk with Jeanie, Please tell her that Carla and PEter from Idaho sent you.

You won't forget this place. Food is wonderful, the place is an organic farm. enjjoy"

This is real Fiji, and that staff there, well, i wanted to take them all home.

They have an organic garden and the food, i put on lots of pounds, couldn't wait for the next meal. Lots to do, and the Astrolabe reef is right there.

There is an island 5 min, by kayak(free) to kayak around and snorkle right off the magical beach."

It's rugged, untamed, and the diving on the Great Astrolabe Reef is spectacular. For a great little eco resort, check out Matava. The food is fabulous for a resort of that caliber, the bures are authentic thatched bures, the owners are on site and manage as well and are a lot of fun - an American and two Brits.

They have no beach to speak of, but you can take kayaks and paddle to a lovely sandy beach.

"If you are looking for cheapish, with good diving, great food, and a fun place, check out Matava Eco Resort..

It's not upscale like Naviti or Treasure Island, it's definitely an 'eco resort' so you're not going to have electricity, TV, hairdryers (all solar powered) but the food is exceptional, the diving incredible, they have waterfall hikes, overnight kayak trips, kayaking, the whole bit.

AND until April they offer 40% off of their accommodations, 30% off from April - June.

With the added plus of having a 10 tank dive, but only paying for 6.

Not sure when you were going, but this is a great deal at a really fun resort.

Now, mind you, it's not specifically a honeymoon destination, but I've been there several times and have had lots and lots of people go there, and everyone loves it. A great atmosphere with great people and amazing food (you'll be blown away by what they feed you for a budget resort!).

They have private, ocean view bures as well"

I thought that Kadavu was spectacular and very remote. This was so romantic and the 'resort' was unbelievable. The place is an organic farm, fruits hanging all over the place, organic garden, making the food so yummy. There are no roads and all travel is done by boat. The snorkeling/diving is on the 4th largest reef in the world. We hiked into a village and swam at the base of this huge waterfall. We kayaked out to the smalll island opposite Matava and along the shore. The staff was the icing on the cake. I am still sending them presents. I wanted to keep all of them in my pocket!!! enjoy, look at the website."
